New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra has dislocated his right shoulder while attempting a diving catch during a promotional shoot in Auckland earlier this week. Even though the NZC statement on the subject did not specify how long Ravindra would be out of action for, it said the return would be determined by “his progress during the first weeks of his rehabilitation”

Ravindra landed awkwardly on the safety mat while attempting the catch during filming and underwent initial assessments on Friday and medical specialists cleared any major structural damage.

New Zealand’s next assignment is still over a month away, when their all-format home tour against India starts with the T20Is on October 22. The squad for the T20I series is set to be announced next week. NZC said it was “unclear” if Ravindra would play that series.

“It was a really unfortunate injury,” New Zealand performance manager Mike Sandle said. “We’re gutted for Rachin and our key priority is making sure he recovers well and gets back on the field as soon as he can.

“As with all commercial shoots involving our players, the activities were agreed in advance by all parties, with appropriate safety measures in place. It was a bit of a freak accident, and we’ll continue to review our processes around events like this in the future.”

Head coach Rob Walter said New Zealand were not going to rush Ravindra back.

“With a heavy schedule of Test cricket in the next six months, we don’t want to rush Rachin back sooner than we need to,” he said. “He’s in great hands in terms of his rehab and we look forward to welcoming him back soon.”

After the five T20Is finish on November 1, New Zealand and India will play five ODIs followed by two Tests in November. There will also be an India A tour of New Zealand for three four-day matches from October 24 to November 10 in the lead up to the Test series.
