Pakistan have been penalised eight World Test Championship (WTC) points after being found eight overs short of the target in the first Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, which they lost by 104 runs.

The loss of points moved them to No. 8 on the WTC table. They have four points from three Tests, an 11.11% points. The win took Bangladesh to sixth place with 44.44% points. They are now above England, who have 31.67% points.

The sanction on Pakistan was imposed by match referee Jeff Crowe under Article 2.22 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players and player support personnel, which deals with minimum-over-rate offences. Players are fined 5% of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time. Teams also lose one WTC point for each over they fail to bowl in time.

Pakistan became the second team to be docked points for maintaining a slow over rate in the ongoing WTC cycle after England lost two points after the Lord’s Test against India in July last year.

Australia are leading the WTC table, their seven wins in eight Tests so far giving them 87.50% points. They are followed by New Zealand (77.78%), defending champions South Africa (75.00%), Sri Lanka (66.67%), and India (48.15%).
