Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been sent to the hospital after he got hit on the head while batting in the second ODI against Australia in Dhaka on Thursday. Mehidy was down on his knees for a few minutes after the blow as he was assessed by the team physio, before he continued to bat and hit a six to seal Bangladesh’s maiden ODI series win against Australia.

Mehidy was struck on the side of his helmet by a Nathan Ellis bouncer on the fourth ball of the 34th over of the chase. Mehidy initially held the point where he got struck on his head, before going down on his knees. Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan was doing the concussion test when Mehidy also appeared to throw up. The Australian team doctor also joined the group, as a stretcher was brought on to the field. Minutes later, he was back on his feet, with the stretcher sent back.

“Mehidy Hasan Miraz had a concussion during the match today,” Bayjedul Islam Khan said after the game. “He continued to play after being assessed in the middle. We have sent him to the hospital to assess the rest of his signs, and for general observation. He will be there for the next 24 hours.”

ESPNcricinfo has learned later that Mehidy was out of danger but will be kept at the hospital on Friday.

Najmul Hossain Shanto took Mehidy’s place in the post-match presentation ceremony, while Taskin Ahmed later praised Mehidy for continuing to bat despite the blow. “It was incredible of Miraz to bat in that condition,” he said. “I think he took a quick decision that if he walks off, the new batter could be prone to making a mistake in that pressure situation.”
