Worcestershire made the most of the bowler-friendly conditions at New Road to dismiss Lancashire for 180 on a stop-start day of Rothesay County Championship Division Two action.

Having lost the entirety of day one to rain, the home side pushed the game on to see Lancashire to 60 for 4 at lunch, but Keaton Jennings’ vital half-century kept the visitors in the fight.

Beyers Swanepoel (4 for 37) and a Fateh Singh three-fer pushed the Pears into the ascendency whilst dodging the rain, but some late resistance saw the away side scrap to 180.

Tom Bailey snagged a wicket in the first over of the reply to reduce Worcestershire to 12 for 1, but saw progress halted late on as play was suspended for bad light.

Inserted to bat first on an overcast morning, Lancashire endured a challenging start at New Road, losing Matty Hurst early on as the right hander edged a Tom Taylor ball to backward point.

The promotion chasing hosts continued to pile the pressure on, and when change bowlers Matthew Waite and Beyers Swanepoel struck in quick succession to remove Josh Bohannon and Marcus Harris for single figure scores, Lancs were 23 for 3.

Experienced campaigner Keaton Jennings was joined by the in-form Rocky Flintoff, with the pair rallying to begin the rebuild, adding 37 for the fourth wicket.

Flintoff (23) played some eye-catching shots but was reined in on the stroke of lunch by spinner Fateh Singh, courtesy of a sharp Ben Allison catch at first slip, with the Red Rose 60 for 4 at the interval.

Just 12 balls had been bowled in the afternoon session when Singh tightened Worcestershire’s grip on proceedings, accounting for Arav Shetty cheaply when the all-rounder mistimed a drive over cover and was caught well by Edavalath.

Jennings dug in in typically resolute fashion, making his way to a resolute sixth Championship half-century of the summer from 112 deliveries, but moments after guiding his side past 100, his defiance was ended when the left-hander edged to Adam Hose at second slip and departed for 55.

Resuming after a brief delay for rain, Lancashire’s problems mounted when Balderson first played down the wrong line to a Swanepoel ball that clattered into off stump, before Nauman Ali was trapped LBW by Ben Allison without scoring that left the visitors 115 for 8.

A plucky 63-ball-26 from Ben Walkden proved valuable before he was snared by Singh (3 for 27), but a second rain interruption of the day meant play was halted until 4:55pm, where upon resumption Tom Bailey added a useful 34 from number ten in Lancashire’s final total of 180.

It was Bailey who then sparked his team into life just four balls into the reply by snaring Dan Lategan and could have had two in the over had an Edavalath edge carried to keeper Hurst.

Jake Libby and Rehaan Edavalath survived the remaining five overs that were possible in the day, before the umpires withdrew the players from the field shortly before 6pm for bad light, with Worcestershire closing 12 for 1 and both sides looking to edge ahead on a crucial third morning.
