Chinmay Sutar, the 29-year-old Mizoram batter, has become only the second India player to score a quadruple century in a first-class innings. Playing in only his second first-class fixture, Sutar surpassed Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to achieve the second-highest score in Ranji Trophy history, finishing on 400 not out against Nagaland in a plate league fixture in Sovima.

Sutar, who was unbeaten on 392 at tea, reached 400 in the 155th over before Mizoram declared on 581 for 9. By then, he had put together an unbroken 189 for the tenth wicket with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak. Sutar was within touching distance for the all-time record for the tournament’s highest individual score – BB Nimbalkar‘s 443* for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49.

Sutar and Chhakchhuak’s partnership is the third highest for the last wicket in the Ranji Trophy, 43 short of the all-time record of 233 held by Ajay Sharma (259) and Maninder Singh (78) for Delhi against Mumbai during the 1991-92 season.

Sutar’s 400* was the 12th score of 400 or more in first-class cricket history (with Brian Lara’s 501* still the leader), and the first instance of a batter converting his maiden first-class century into a quadruple hundred. The previous highest for a maiden first-class century was the 341 scored by Bihar’s Sakibul Gani, in February 2022 against Mizoram.

Sutar had represented Mumbai earlier this year during the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the domestic 50-over competition, following impressive returns in the local leagues. In June, he steered MSC Maratha Royals to a successful title defence in the Mumbai T20 League, finishing the tournament with back-to-back half-centuries. He finished the season with 212 runs in six innings at a strike rate touching 120.

Prior to the start of the 2026-27 season, Sutar obtained an NoC from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mizoram in last week’s season opener, hitting 35 and 99 in a three-wicket loss to Manipur. Mizoram’s fightback despite conceding a 68-run lead was due to Sutar’s second-innings effort.
