England fast bowler, Brydon Carse, has been charged by the Cricket Regulator for bringing the game into disrepute, in the wake of an incident in a Derby nightclub in August.

Carse, 31, was arrested and then de-arrested at approximately 4am on August 23, on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly following Durham‘s County Championship victory over Derbyshire the previous afternoon.

A video on social media showed Carse being led out of the club in handcuffs on the night in question, with team-mates including Ben Stokes and Matthew Potts also visible in the footage.

Derbyshire Police subsequently confirmed it had been looking into an allegation of assault, but closed that investigation last month.

In the wake of the incident, Carse was stood down from selection for England’s second Test against Pakistan at Lord’s, and has not been considered for any subsequent squads – although he played a prominent role in Durham’s march towards the second division Championship title.

Speaking about the incident last month, Brendon McCullum, England’s white-ball head coach – who also picked him for the most-recent of his 58 England appearances, at Sydney in January’s fifth Ashes Test – warned that the player needed to “get his house in order” before he could earn a recall.

In a statement on Friday, the Cricket Regulator confirmed that Carse has now been charged with breaching regulation 3.2 of the ECB’s professional conduct regulations, which pertains to bringing the game into disrepute.

He is due to appear before a Cricket Discipline Panel hearing within the next few weeks, where his punishment will be determined. This could range from a reprimand to a lengthy playing ban.

Regulation 3.2 states that “no participant may conduct themselves in a manner, do any act or make any omission at any time which is improper or which may be prejudicial to the interests of cricket or which may bring the ECB, the game of cricket or any cricketer or group of cricketers into disrepute”.

Carse is entering the second year of his two-year ECB contract, but his conduct had been under scrutiny prior to the Derby incident. He was spotted out in Adelaide following the Ashes-losing defeat in the third Test, after Stokes, his then-captain, had ordered his players to remain at the team hotel.

Harry Brook, England’s white-ball captain, acknowledged his absence during the recent series against Sri Lanka, adding that he “needed some time away” from international cricket.

“He’s working on a few things behind the scenes and hopefully he’ll be ready at some point in the future,” Brook said.
