Glamorgan and Leicestershire are both still waiting for their first wins in this season’s Rothesay County Championship after a stale draw at Sophia Gardens.

The two newly promoted sides played out their first clash in the top division since 2001 in a strung-out, three-innings draw, with hands shaken at 5pm.

Jonny Tattersall, 86 not out overnight, completed his century to take Leicestershire to 585 for 7 dec, before Asa Tribe‘s unbeaten half-century guided Glamorgan to 137 for 2 from their 52-over second innings.

Ben Cox resumed with Tattersall at the start of play, with Leicestershire safely placed on 500 for 5 after day three. The pair, playing for milestones, reached their century partnership with ease. Cox’s 68 not out added a late flurry in an otherwise time-petering morning session.

Kiran Carlson, rarely used as a bowler, picked up a second wicket in his longest stint of bowling since the opening game in 2024, in which Middlesex had batted for 211 overs in response to Sam Northeast’s Lord’s record triple-century. His 2 for 99 from 33 overs today included time spent bowling in his weathered Glamorgan cap instead of opting for the third new ball.

When Ben Green tried to up the ante, he was bowled by Andy Gorvin and some late additions to the tally by Ajaz Patel were enough for the Foxes, who declared with a lead of 146 and 69 overs in which to push for an unlikely victory.

The hybrid pitch offered more than on previous days but in minimal proportions. Carlson suffered two blows in the same Josh Hull over, one to the forearm, one to the rib but continued to battle on despite the draw being all but certain.

Tom Scriven fielded in place of Jake Weatherald after the Australian retired hurt late on day two. Though he didn’t return to the field at any stage, Leicesteshire opted against using an injury replacement, thereby keeping him eligible for their next fixture against Nottinghamshire.
